It seems Orem's water is high in Phosphates. At least the guy at Aquatica said that would be one reason I've had problems keeping it down. Right now I use Phosequard in my filter.

When I set up my 55, suggestions on taking care of the potential phosphate problems?

Will plants help with that?
Are there filter pads for phosphate I can put in my canister, or will I have to keep up with the Phosguard in a bag, in the filter?

thanks

Do you have a phosphate test kit? If so, how high are the phosphates in Orem water? If you don't have a phosphate test kit, I would be happy to test your water if you brought me a water sample.

Are you planning on adding CO2? If so, I highly doubt that high phosphates from the tap will be a problem. If your aren't adding CO2, then they probably won't be a problem. Nutrient ratios are important to keeping algae down. If your phosphates are high, then simply add more nitrates (within reason).

Unless your phosphates are really high, I don't think you will have anything to worry about. If your phosphates are really high (3ppm or more), you may want to look at reducing them somehow. You will have to be VERY careful if you use Phosguard. If the phosguard reduces your phosphates too much, you will get algae. And if your phosguard absorbs all the phosphates it can before you replace it, then your phosphate levels will rise, and you will get algae. It might be possible to work something out, but it seems like a steep uphill battle. Be sure to verify your high phosphates before worrying too much about them.

Thanks, I will bring a sample tomorrow and we'll see how high they are.

I should probably expand my API testing kit....
