Does anyone here own a Mastacembelus elipsifer? I just purchased two and wanted to know if they are mild mannered enough to keep with the rest of the Tangs. Since they love to hide, do they need to be tong fed?

I havent tried them, but understood that they will readily eat pellets. I know a guy who purchased them so he didnt have to pull tropheus fry any longer, but they didnt bother the fry.
Nice purchase _________________ Just here waiting for dinner to grow out....

I heard these things from bob allen:
-No one really knows how to breed them. So if you have one it most likely wild cught and can be very finicky.
-They are VERY good escape artists
-And not to mix them with shellies cause they are a natural predator of shellie babies (hence the slender nose) And that shellies will try to destroy them at all costs. _________________

I have read (Never had one because I didn't want to spend all that money to be digging eels out of filters etc.) that because they're technically part of the African spiny Eels group you can pretty much treat them as Fire eels, tire tracks or peacock eels. From what I've seen I would place them somewhere between a peacock and a tire track eel temperament wise.
However I have noticed that Masts are longer and more slender which suggests they're adapted to smaller prey (Shrimps and fry I bet). I have had tire tracks before and they would snatch ghost shrimp out of mid-water in the most amazing displays. |
